Bouncers asked to help control illegal cab drivers BOUNCERS from a town centre night club could increase the amount of time they spend monitoring a taxi rank to stop people using unlawful vehicles. Door staff from Liquid and Envy, High Street, Colchester, organise the queue for the taxi rank opposite the club from 3am. A meeting between the club, council officials and the Hackney Carriage Association in the next few weeks is expected to see the scheme extended. Colin Daines, protective services manager at Colchester Council, said: “We are aware the current arrangements need to be extended and we are hopeful this will improve in the next few weeks.” Paul Owen, a cab driver for 14 years, beleives the council needs to clamp down on illegal “taxis”. He said: “There are some marshalls out here at night, but we need more. “They need to stop mini cabs. They all hang about up the road waiting to come down. “Business is the hardest it’s ever been. Last year was the worst since I started.” l Colchester Council will decide tonight if the taxis can sell advertising space on their doors. A report to be considered by the council’s licencing commitee believes allowing advertisements could boost revenue for the taxi drivers http://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/ |
