Glasgow City Council rejects taxi fare increase

19th April 2011

Glasgow City Council has rejected a proposal to increase the price of taxi fares in the city, despite the protests of local cab operators.

The six members of the local authority's licensing and regulatory committee opted against implementing a suggested 6.64 per cent rise in fare prices for black cabs, following a four to two majority vote, reports the Glasgow Evening Times.

Its decision has been met with anger from those representing the local trade, who complained that they have to cope with constantly increasing operating costs.

The proposed increase of 6.64 per cent has been recommended to the council by industry experts such as the AA as being an accurate reflection of the rising expenses associated with driving a taxi in Glasgow in 2011, compared to last year.

Drivers have therefore condemned the decision to reject the fare hike as being equivalent to a pay cut.

This comes as cabbies in Aberdeen are also calling for an increase in fare prices, citing the need to mitigate the rising price of petrol and VAT.
