Cab drivers’ anger over Telford fare rises

Wednesday 27th April 2011

Black cab drivers in Telford today angrily accused council licensing chiefs of “taking the mickey” over implementing planned fare increases.

The hike, which would see an average 10-mile journey cost £2 more, was approved a month ago by the council after a request from Telford Hackney Carriage Association.

But drivers said today it had still not come into force and they were struggling to make ends meet.

Malcolm Hayward, a driver in the town, said: “We really need the rise now, not next month, or next year. We’re struggling."

“The council is taking the mickey."

“We would like to do something to show how angry we are feeling but we are self employed, if we’re not in the car we’re not making any money.”

Members of Telford & Wrekin Council’s licensing committee voted unanimously to publish a formal notice advertising the proposed increases. But after more than a month the 28 day consultation has still not been opened.

The rise was requested by the Hackney Carriage Association in the face of spiralling fuel prices, insurance and the cost of living.

Suzanne Fisher, licensing manager for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “The legal notice to open up the 28 day consultation will go out as soon as possible.”
