All 109 Hackney cabs in the area were given a letter from the city council saying they had to present their vehicles in respect of switches for the roof lights on their vehicles at the White Lund station between 10am and 2.30pm last Thursday, the day before Good Friday.

Taxi drivers’ anger over inspection

TAXI drivers claim they were frightened into turning up at the city council MOT station for an inspection for fear of losing their livelihood over the busy Easter weekend.

All 109 Hackney cabs in the area were given a letter from the city council saying they had to present their vehicles in respect of switches for the roof lights on their vehicles at the White Lund station between 10am and 2.30pm last Thursday, the day before Good Friday.

Advice from The National Private Hire Association said taxi drivers should not respond to the letter - but many were frightened not to turn up for fear of having their licence suspended.

Andy Kay, chairman of the Lancaster City Hackney Cabs Proprietors Association, said: “The city council are applying the rules and regulations to suit their needs, rather than as they are intended.”
