Two-in-one taxis to hit Mumbai roads

April 28, 2011

MUMBAI: The state government will soon grant permission for two-in-one taxis in Mumbai.

This means that the black-and-yellow ordinary taxis in which you travel will be allowed to switch on the air-conditioner on demand. "Most of the new taxi models (Wagon-R or Santro) are fitted with AC. Based on request from the passenger, the driver can switch to AC mode and charge extra money,'' said a senior RTO official. The proposal is now before the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority for a final clearance.

For passengers, the AC comfort will come for 10 per cent extra money over the normal fare. So if you are feeling hot and sultry in Mumbai, you can just direct the cabbie to switch on the AC for you. RTO sources said that the government planned to expedite the process of clearing the proposal and issuing the notification.

I've been told the AC uses more fuel when switched on but is it 10% more fuel :?

It depends on the vehicle but most modern aircon units seem to make only a small dent in the fuel economy unless you are sitting in traffic with the engine idling all day in which case the engine will usually rubn at 2 to 300 RPm more to preovide enough power for the fans and pumps

If fuel accounted for approx 20% of the running costs then even if it did use 10% more fuel that would only equate to around a 2% increase on the over all Fare, which means scheming Gupta Cabs is creaming off an extra 8% profit for bugger all!!!
