Taxi drivers told to wait for fare decision

TAXI drivers who want to put up their prices have been told they must wait until later in the year. Forty taxi drivers wrote to North Devon Council to ask for a tariff increase to be considered, to reflect rising fuel costs.

Dave Rogan, spokesman for the taxi drivers, told the licensing committee the last tariff increase had been in 2003, when the cost of fuel per litre was 85p. He said it had now reached £1.46 at some garages.

He asked councillors: "Is it really reasonable to defer an increase any longer? "These drivers are transporting people at their own expense. This can't be reasonable and can't be allowed to continue."

Mr Rogan asked for the moving-off charge to increase from £2.50 to £2.90 and for an extra 20p to be added to each "running mile". But councillors said the real issue was the regulation of the industry, including the use of meters, which needed to be decided as a whole.

Acting licensing manager David Bennett said a review of tariffs was already scheduled for the next committee meeting. Councillor Jasmine Chesters said she did not think drivers used their meters anyway. She said: "You can't come to us and ask for an increase in fares if you can't use what you've already been given."

One driver, who did not give his name, applauded Mrs Chesters and said all drivers would start making a living if they used their meters. In a report to the committee Mr Bennett revealed 77 per cent of drivers questioned said they did not always charge the full fare.

John Mathews, chairman of the committee, warned councillors that delaying the decision might mean no change for the drivers until at least August. But Councillor Mike Edmunds said the issue was bigger than the tariff increase and needed to be resolved once and for all.

Councillor Dick Jones said the meeting was a prime example of the industry "not singing from the same hymn sheet". He said: "Come back and show us you can self-regulate and then we will meet you more than halfway."

It was decided to make a decision at the next meeting, after a full review.

Bloody hell a council with brains, but why don't they go one further and suspend any driver who does not use there meter within the licencing district

Because they probably don't have a bylaw that states that the meter must be used at all times within the prescribed area.
We have no such bylaw in our area.

Its mandatory if the council set and seal the meters

Well we don't have it in our borough!

if the drivers charged the full metered fare that would equate to the increase and a bit more then they are asking for
