Presenting their case are, left to right: Orangzeb Malik (President Pakistani Canadian Association); Abdul Haq; Muhammed “Raju” Tahir; Allan Anandalingam; and Choudhry Ansaar Ahmed.

Some Cornwall taxi owners and drivers have a rally planned for Easter Monday, March 28th, 2005 at 11 a.m. in front of the Justice Building on Pitt Street, calling for equal opportunity employment among both taxi companies in the city and “a comprehensive review of the taxi bylaws to eliminate the exploitation of monopoly by the taxi brokers.”

According to a prepared news release read by Muhammed “Raju” Tahir on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005, “The individuals and their families that are attending this rally are deeply affected by the racial intolerance that is taking place in this industry and we want something done.”

Mayor Phil Poirier, along with Police Services Chief Dan Parkinson have been invited to attend, but Mayor Poirier tells Seaway News he will not be attending. He invites the parties to make their case before a regular meeting of the Police Services Board.

Assisting the cabbies is Councillor Mark MacDonald who says the issues have been “danced around” and he would like to see a commission set up to address the “long history of problems.”
