Brighton and Hove taxi marshals patrol for last time

Cab drivers have called for councillors to find funding to help keep them and passengers safe.

Brighton and Hove's taxi marshals took part in their last patrol on Saturday night after their funding ran out.

Taxi drivers are calling on Brighton and Hove City Council to pay to reinstate the system that keeps them and customers safe.

John Streeter, of Brighton and Hove Streamline Taxis, said the marshals would be badly missed.

The marshals were briefed to keep queues orderly and to stop people too drunk to travel and those who have food and drink from getting into cabs.

It is the end of the university term so be prepared to be without the Marshall's for the summer recess. The chances are they are trying to save some money and will reinstate them upon return..............hopefully.

Strange thing about this is the trade pay for marshals via their licensing fees, yet the council are stopping it to save money.

At least those that opposed paying for it are now happy. But I doubt license fees will come down.

I was under the impression that it was "Home Office Funded", having said that, to what degree I do not know.

The first few months were funding by a grant to the Sudanese drivers, but the trade has paid for the last two years.

No, but it is alleged they had their favourite marshals who held back certain jobs for certain drivers.

I refuse to believe that that kind of thing goes on in the trade. [-(
