Camberley taxi driver attacked by passengers

A 40-year-old Surrey taxi driver has been threatened with a knife and beaten up by two passengers after they got out of the car and refused to pay.

One of the men produced the knife after the driver challenged them in Mitcham Road, Old Dean, Camberley on Sunday.

The driver knocked the knife out of his hand but the second man pushed him over and repeatedly stamped on his face.

A 19-year-old man from Camberley has been arrested and bailed until 27 July pending further inquiries.

Police said the driver was treated at Frimley Park Hospital for his injuries, which included cuts and bruises, and was discharged on Monday.

"This was an unprovoked, nasty attack on a man who was simply trying to do his job," said Det Sgt Paul Warriner.

"The driver was viciously beaten."

He appealed for anyone with information to contact police.

Both suspects are described as white. One had a balding spot and was wearing a pink or red top, while the other was wearing a light jumper, dark trousers and white shoes.
