Asbo threat over cabbies' horns

Drivers say they do not use their horns illegally
Taxi drivers have been warned that if they repeatedly beep the horn as they pick up customers, they may be served with an anti-social behaviour order.
North Wales Police say a consultation shows the use of horns "at all times of the day and night" in Colwyn Bay is damaging people's quality of life.

A police letter has been sent out to cabbies calling on them to end the practice.

But the drivers have said they only use their horns within the legal hours.

The official warning was issued after a consultation with people in Colwyn Bay showed that the use of car horns by taxi drivers had become prevalent.

At the end of the day we're trying to do our jobs

Eryl Hughes

The taxi drivers who sometimes sound their horn instead of walking up a drive to knock on a customer's door have been told to bring an immediate and permanent end to using their horns or face being issued with an Asbo.

Local driver Eryl Hughes, who has been in the business for 10 years, has condemned the move.

"I think it's a bit ridiculous to be honest with you," said Mr Hughes.

"At the end of the day we're trying to do our jobs.

"When we do toot a horn it's not late at night as they try to imply. It's within the times within the law."

Cabbies have said they are obeying the police request but that some customers are missing their taxi because they do not realise it is there.

Superintendent Simon Humphries of the Central Division Command team said North Wales Police take anti-social behaviour "very seriously".

He added: "We listen to the concerns of residents of north Wales and some of these are people whose quality of life is significantly affected by the inconsiderate and frequent use of vehicle horns at all times of the day and night.

"We will continue to take fair, reasonable and proportionate action to uphold the quality of life of the residents of north Wales."

Those PH boys ...............................

Giving the taxi trade a bad name again .......................

It'll be a pity if the ban them in Eastbourne cause for one driver I know its the only horn they ever get to use properly.

BEEP BEEP

lol GA,

do you not think the police would be better employed sorting out trouble on cab ranks and assisting drivers quicker in times of trouble, than firing bloody ASBO's at them for sounding horns?

They seem to be saying here, the cab trade can pay for doormen on taxi ranks we aint got the resources, but if they commit a minor motoring offence we'll take them to court!

so they'd prefer to call in a no fare rather than getting off their fat lazy arses and knocking on someones door? hardly looking after the customers is it?

i see drivers down here beeping their horns at all times of night. personally i think its rude and inconsiderate. and you'll probably get you fare quicker most of the time if you just went and knocked on the door anyway instead of blasting your horn at night and waking up the neighbourhood kiddies.

its our company policy not to beep the horn. we go and knock on the door every time. its gets you the fare faster in most cases, the customers like it and their neighbours do too i should think.

Do you still knock on front doors at 3am?

What is the best way to apologise to a home owner you wake up at 3am after someone has ordered a cab to their house for a laugh?

It's surprising how many people who ring for a cab that will be in the back room when you arrive outside their house.

I understanbd what you are saying if its at 3am, fair enough turn up out side the house and the punter should be waiting. And I would never sound my horn, for what thats worth.

However, i understand the police in question are going to use asbo's on any driver caught night or daytime.

If you don't sound your horn, nor ring the bell, then if you haven't got 'call-back' what do you do? [-(

Me, thankfully my office is closed that time of night.

At the end of the day they (the customer) should all be ready waiting for the cab whether it is day or night or if it's a job at a pub or a house, if some people can then why can't others.

I had a job recently in the early hours and had been sat outside for a couple of minutes when the operator asked me how long til I got there, I told him I'd been there for a couple of minutes, next thing to front door opens and out they walk.

lol sussex, I think they want my taxi more than I want their fare.

If there not out in 5 minutes I go to the nearest rank or onto the next job, and my office should in theory tell them when they phone back, I've been and gone and want minimum fare on top of the second vehicles fare, for my efforts.
