I have mixed views on this as the vast majority of Suburban London taxi drivers (yellow badges) are honest and stick to the rules, but there seems to be a new breed of driver who does the Suburban knowledge (split into about 7 sectors) with a view to working up town which is the domain of me and another 21'000 GBC's who have studied the whole of London over 3 years (or more)

The trouble is the minority who do work up town seem to cock up the routes as they rely on Sat Nav's, and the public not knowing any difference as they drive the same taxis as me, think some London cabbies ain't got a clue where they're going, thus damaging my future trade.

So Yellow and Green window identifiers are coming, hopefuly it will deter those going down the much quicker suburban sector knowledge with the sole intention of working anywhere but their sector.

It wouldn't work because of the large number of cabs that are rented, many of which are short term. You'd have a Green Badge driver getting in to a Yellow plated cab and vice versa. But even so, the drivers ID is going to have to move with him/her from cab to cab.

That's a fair enough point. So maybe the sign in the window makes sense.

Be funny if they are the same design as the minicab discs. :D

What will the identifiers look like? Will they have the name of the sector(s), the driver is allowed to ply for hire in big letters?

What's to stop say, a Richmond driver taking a fare to City Airport, or the O2 then plying for hire there once dropped?

I assume they will be displayed on the partition, not on the rear window.

That would mean that the punter would already be in the taxi before he could see the sign. The punter from overseas who speaks little English and reads even less English will still not know what the signs mean.

It's not for the punter, the identifiers are for enforcement, so the guy who is sitting on Richmond Station will see that the taxi in front actualy belongs to Bexley, and can then in his own words politely tell him to naff off back to Bexley.

And they're for the rear / front windows.

GBC could they not put a wide yellow band around the centre of the cabs as well as the yellow plates the band could be the same sticky stuff used for lettering
The information as to what cab is what could be put on all web sits and information literature

If I understand this correctly, it's not the cab that's zoned - it's the driver.
The cab can be used by any licenced driver in any zone, provided he has a yellow badge valid for that zone or a green badge valid in all zones.
Some cabs are used in different zones by different drivers so whatever is used must be changed when the driver changes.

Have I got this right?
