Taxi campaign to ensure wheelchair users strapped in Saturday 11 June 2011 14:00 A new safety campaign is aimed at taxi drivers who carry disabled people in wheelchairs. “Safety on the Move” stemmed from an idea by Ann Holgate who tragically lost her son, Kristian, in March 2009. The 17-year-old Rastrick student suffered from muscular dystrophy. He died almost a month after he was thrown from his wheelchair while travelling in a specially-adapted cab at Ainley Top on route to Huddersfield New College. On June 24 Calderdale Council’s Road Safety Team and Ravenscliffe High School, Halifax, will launch the campaign. Mrs Holgate wants to ensure the safety of wheelchair users as they are transported by ensuring that the wheelchair and passenger are properly restrained. “No family should have to go through what we have." “Taking simple steps to ensure that wheelchairs and their occupants are properly secured could help prevent a tragedy." “It only takes a few seconds to put a seat belt on – and for wheelchair users, those few seconds of extra care could be the difference between life and death in the event of a crash.” Hackney carriage drivers and Calderdale Access buses will display stickers with the message “We Care. We Will Secure Your Chair” and stickers for wheelchairs will say “Please Care. Secure My Chair.” Calderdale Council said it hoped other local authorities and transport providers would join the campaign. In February this year a crown court judge halted the case against the cab driver transporting Kristian because he said it would have been an “abuse of process.” During an earlier interview the driver said he had secured Kristian’s wheelchair in the taxi but forgot to fasten a seatbelt. I would have thought that was a given. It will certainly be compulsory once all the legislation in the Equality Act kick in, if it isn't already. Certainly a cabbie was successfully prosecuted in Walsall some months ago for a similar offence, but without the tragic consequences. |

page 22 taxitalk magazine November 2006. This is my wheelchair "bible" and it is also dealt with in great detail elsewhere in this forum. Basically, over 6 stone - no travel - except in a tail lift bus. I have a copy saved as pdf but for some reason, it wont copy & paste on here. |

I have previously asked the HSE what is there guidance on loading a wheelchair passenger into a taxi. The reply i got was that there was no hard and fast rules and that a full risk assessment should be carried out.They also made it clear that there was no set weight limitations. The original post is very sad and i know from experience that because there are so many different types and sizes of wheelchairs there is a tendency to still carry the passenger even if you cannot secure the wheelchair properly.The fear is you upset the passenger and they report you for not taken them, so not to cause a fuss some operators take a risk and transport a wheelchair that is not %100 secure. Proper Guidance is needed from the HSE to help drivers. |

what differance will a sticker make??...if your prone to being to lazy to secure a wheelchair then a stickers not gonna make one jot of differance!! |

Reading the report, it does say that the chair was secured correctly. The problem was that the passenger was not wearing the seatbelt because the driver "forgot". |
