Cabbie admits drink driving

A Winsford cabbie has admitted to driving while almost four times over the drink drive limit.

Michael James Davies, 41, of St Chads Fields, admitted to the offence at Northwich Magistrates Court on Thursday last week.

Police stopped the defendent as he was driving his Citroen Despatch taxi on Grange Lane in Winsford in the ealry hours of April 10.

A police breath test revealed he had 129 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Prosecuting Sue Gibson said: "At about 1.30am officers on duty were flagged down by door staff at DeBees club."

"They said a taxi cab had just left the area and that they believed the driver had been drinking. They said it had been driven up the high street with no lights on."

"The officers caught up with the taxi and it braked and swerved on the corner of Grange Lane."

"The driver smelled strongly of drink and was unsteady on his feet."

"He told officers he was Micheal Edwards and confirmed it was his taxi."

He later admitted he had given false details to the police and he was charged with driving with excess alcohol and obstructing a police officer.

The cab was owned by GM Travel, who told police the cab was not on duty at the time, although the defendant was allowed to use it for personal use.

Davies, who has a young son, told police he had drank about five or six pints of lager and four shorts at DeBees before trying to drive home.

Asked to described his state of drunkeness on a scale of one to 10, he said he was a three.

He admitted he had a problem with alcohol and was also taking anti-depressants.

Defending, Chris Johnson told the court: "Unfortunately someone was playing with his emotions that night."

"He was going through a difficult time with his ex-girlfriend."

"She had called him up that night and asked him to come down to DeBees."

"What he did not know is that she would be with her new boyfriend. In effect she had got him there to humiliate him."

"He reacted by drinking and foolishly got into his car rather than getting a taxi. It was very much down to his emotional state."

Davies was released on unconditional bail while reports are prepared with a view to his sentence.

Has passed the custody threshold so it's 50/50 he get a custodial sentence, although it could be suspended.

But he will get a minimum 2 and a half year ban.
