Girlington cabbie Amjid Nadeem beaten and car burned out after picking up fare in Ravenscliffe

9:00am Thursday 16th June 2011

A taxi driver was treated in hospital after he was beaten up and his cab stolen in a brutal robbery.

Father-of-three Amjid Nadeem, 41, was kicked in the head and body and hit with a stick during the violent incident.

His private hire company boss, Wajid Jahangir, said the robbers had used unnecessary violence and could have killed Mr Nadeem.

Mr Nadeem, who works for Eccleshill-based Premier Cars, was sent to pick up a fare in Ravenscliffe, Bradford, shortly after 11pm on Tuesday and took a group of young men to Rowantree Drive in Thorpe Edge.

Mr Jahangir said his driver was forced to hand over the keys to his silver Peugeot 407. He was trying to walk away when he was set upon, repeatedly kicked and hit over the head with a wooden stick.

The robbers drove off in his vehicle, which was found burned out in nearby Prospect Street four hours later.

Mr Nadeem was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary for treatment and released several hours later. Last night he was recovering at his home in Girlington.

Mr Jahangir said: “A similar thing happened to another driver two years ago. We need anyone who witnessed what happened to come forward and tell us who is responsible.”

Detective Inspector John Mountain, of Airedale and North Bradford CID, confirmed police were investigating an incident of robbery at Rowantree Drive and appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

He said: “Inquiries are at an early stage and we are obtaining a statement from the complainant.” Det Insp Mountain appealed for anyone who witnessed the Peugeot being abandoned in Prospect Street to contact them.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Airedale and North Bradford CID, on 0845 6060606, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
