Whats all this malarky about geting money for your plates HOW?????
sensable answers please
shurely the council own the plates and when your finished with them they should go back thats what we have to do, and all we get is the £25 deposit back

oh dear skippy your council is breaking the law pal.

the ruling is the plate goes with the car, sell the car and the council must allow its transfer until the end of its current license at least.

some council solicitors argue therefore if the plate has been properly administered by the new vehicle owner, there is no case to withdraw it.

yep up to the current talk on deregulation our plates were trading at 50k plus

A licensed hackney carriage with a plate may be transferred (sold), but a plate cannot be rented without a vehicle. Challenor v Evans (22.11.86)'...Although a vehicle with a licence had an enhanced value it was not possible for the proprietor of a licensed hackney carriage to sell the vehilce but retain ownership of the licence plate...'. If this is occurring, the validaty of insurance is brought into question, especially if the person renting out the vehicle applies for the insurance as they do not have an insurable interest in the vehicle being insured.

Not knowing if that is true or not, but in our area you can rent a plate off someone who sits at home and put it on the vehicle of your choice providing the vehicle is in the [logbook] name of the plate renter plus the insurance and stuff is also in the plate renters name

wasn't there a case in Hull a few years ago whereas a dozen or so plate renters took the matter to court with the view, if the plate is on my vehicle the plate is now mine view, I don't know what happened after that I think it went to crown court but never heard the decision, I know when it was on going the Taxi dept was rushing round telling the plate owner to get it in writing or something like that.

I'm not sure about Hull, but the Ombudsman made Bournemouth Council pay tens of thousands to an owner who was led to believe that it didn't matter who the owner of the plate was, it's the owner of the vehicle that matters.

I heard of a case in Hull from a few years ago, I understand it was local councillors renting out plates without vehicles, though my memory is a little blurred.

not quite I am the registered keeper of some taxis owned by x local authority, the plate have been supplied by y local authority in registered keepers name

who owns the vehicles? x local authority, and the plates are owned by y local authority.

but my name is on both the license and log book.
