Woman’s £20 taxi swindle A SOUTH Tyneside woman swindled a taxi driver out of almost £20 after he drove her home from a night out. Fare-dodging Georgia Wells didn’t have enough money to pay for the lift from Gateshead to her home in South Shields, so she wrote her name, address and telephone number on a piece of paper, and told the driver to call the following morning. But when the trusting driver arrived, he found the address did not exist, and 20-year-old Wells, of Garrick Street, South Shields, was nowhere to be seen. Wells, 20, appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court where she pleaded guilty to making off without payment, in the early hours of July 31. Keith Laidler, prosecuting, said: “The taxi driver picked her up in Prince Consort Road, Gateshead. She was one of two women who got into the car, “The driver took them took to Olive Street, South Shields. When they arrived Miss Wells knocked on the door of a house, but there was no answer, so she asked the taxi driver to take her to Laygate. “The driver agreed to do so but, when they got there, she wrote an address on a piece of paper, and asked him to return before noon the following day.” He added: “He could not find the address she gave him, 48 Laygate Place, so he went back to Olive Street, but Wells was not there, and so he went to the police station to report it. “Acting on information, police arrested Wells several days later. “The amount of money lost is £19.60, and that is outstanding to the driver.” The court heard from the Probation Service that Wells has “a number of difficulties”, and finds it difficult to communicate with people on a one-to-one basis. While a probation officer was reading out the report, magistrates decided to stand the case down because Wells was feeling unwell. At this point Wells walked out of the courtroom. She briefly returned to hear magistrates adjourn the case until Thursday, September 8, when she will be sentenced. source: http://www.shieldsgazette.com/ |

Difficulties my arse. She tried to play the guy and got caught. It really bugs me how most people seem to think fare dodging is somehow a less severe crime than other kinds of thieving. |

When the police come out round here they think its sufficient to knock on the door and get the runner to hand over the fare, or they say come back tomorrow and they'll have the money. I always push for an arrest to be made, after all the offence has been commited, never had any luck yet though. Where is the punishment if someone doesn't pay straight away but then hands over the fare when the police arrive ? If I go to Tesco and try to walk out without paying for something and get caught the police are always called and always make an arrest. They don't give the option of paying up with no further action, why is nicking a loaf of bread deemed more serious than attempting to avoid a £10 taxi fare ? |
