Dundee taxi driver suspended after sex offence conviction
A Dundee taxi driver has had his licence suspended after he was convicted of a sexual offence.
Gordon Adam (50), Hilltown Terrace, was found guilty earlier this week of trying to film a woman using the toilet by positioning a camera pen in a drinks can in the bathroom at a house in Whitehall Street in July 2010.
He is to be sentenced next month and has been placed on the sex offenders register in the meantime.
Following his conviction, it is understood the city council's licensing sub-committee held a special suspension hearing where his badge was withdrawn.
A council source revealed a request has been made for a hearing to appeal that decision. The hearing will be held in private, probably at the end of this month.
When the case originally came up more than a year ago, Adam's licence was suspended and his badge and paperwork confiscated by the council.
However he was reinstated after a hearing last November when his explanation of events, and the views of Tayside Police, were accepted by the committee.
A Courier reader, who asked not to be named, said Mr Adam has been working since then as a taxi driver.
The man said: "An offence of this nature should be an immediate suspension of his badge pending any trial. It beggars belief that Mr Adam was given his badge back before he went to trial.
"Questions should be asked why he was given his badge back, especially as they had seen fit to take it off him initially.
"We were told the council had given him a severe warning, which is ridiculous. Taxi drivers work with some of the most vulnerable people in our society and should be squeaky clean."
It is believed that the council took steps to inform all taxi offices of Adam's suspension following this week's hearing.
Rod Wallace, convener of the licensing committee, said he could not comment on an individual matter as the case had been held in private.
A spokesman for the city council stressed it would not comment on a specific case, but added: "The licensing sub-committee would consider any matters in private regarding information that may have been brought forward. There are a range of options open to a sub-committee."
