Taxi drivers attacked by gang at Cambridge railway station
A terrifying attack in broad daylight at Cambridge railway station left taxi drivers shocked. In front of dozens of people setting off for London on Saturday morning a group of young men set upon taxi drivers waiting for customers at the station rank.
A taxi driver, who did not wish to be named, told the News the men were waving bottles of wine around at 9.30am when they approached the rank looking to travel to Fenstanton. An argument arose and the group smashed the glass bottles on the pavement before ripping one driver’s shirt and punching another in the face. They then vandalised about three of the waiting taxis, ripping off wing mirrors, before running off.
The driver said: “When I got to the station one of the drivers had had his shirt ripped open and he said he had been assaulted by these men and they had smashed up the cars. “I heard they were carrying wine and wanted to go to Fenstanton. “They started shouting and pushing the driver. Another driver was punched in the face. Others were grabbed or scratched.
“About six or seven drivers waiting at the rank were witnesses. “Some of the cars were really quite badly damaged, they kicked off the wing mirror on one and damaged a front and back wing of another. “They smashed the bottles of the ground and they had to be cleared up as well.”
Two men were arrested by police on suspicion of criminal damage. A spokesman from Cambridgeshire police said two men have been bailed to allow for further inquiries to be made.
