Skull, as I got to know Jimmy Reid quite well over the 6 years, or so, that he and William McIlvanney regularly visited my Restaurant. I can tell you that he always discussed and thought out his solutions to problems that he addressed, and never belittled the subjects of his well directed tirades. What I don't know is whether Mr McIlvanney gave him any help in writing his speeches although I think that there was probably an input of some kind there. There were several occasions when the Staff were sent home and we chatted, late into the winter night, about Politics and Labour Relations, which has always been one of my special interests.
I think that you would do well to emulate Jimmy.
p.s. Am I right in thinking that you are no longer a Taxi Driver?
Sorry about that, my utter contempt for your average cab driver sometimes spills over into my writing. I think it's something to do with people who wallow in their own ignorance and servility.
When I read stereotypical solutions to problems, which only serve to perpetuate the madness, I see someone who needs a good slap.
Jimmy Reid, was a great man with a huge understanding of what ails society, but I sometimes wonder if he was expecting too much from the proletariat. I might add, if edders had taken the time to read Jimmy Reid's speech, he may have written something different to the unimaginative [edited by admin], I've come to expect from some on this forum.
And as for no longer being a taxi driver, twenty-years of experience says I can comment upon what and who I like.
I know things will never change for most of the bewildered herd, but it does give me some light entertainment when practising my writing.
Oh and depending on what happens at the turn of the new year, I doubt you will be hearing from me quite so often and maybe not at all.
