Cabbies urged to help war on metal thieves

TAXI drivers are being urged to join forces with police and deter metal thieves – or face being prosecuted. Hartlepool Police say some cabbies have been seen dropping people off at scrap yards in the town with what are suspected to be stolen items, such as copper piping and lead from roofs.

It was reported yesterday how two operations have been launched to deal with the rise of valuable metal thefts in the town and police chiefs are now urging taxi firms to get on board. Acting Chief Inspector Lee Rukin, of Hartlepool Police, said: “We need to educate taxi drivers that by carrying these people they are breaking the law.

“They have an obligation to help reduce crime in the town and when people get in their cars with these items they should be thinking about where they have come from. “They should also be thinking ‘am I allowed to carry waste?’, and the simple answer is no as they do not have a licence for it. That leaves them open to prosecution, which is not what we want. “We work very closely with the drivers in this town and they have been a big help in many ways, most notably in the night time economy and we hope to continue those good relationships.”

Operation Throttle and Operation Duracell will see officers posted on the gates of the town’s three scrapyards, Sims Metal Management, in Windermere Road, EMR, in Thomlinson Road, and Pout & Foster, in Mainsforth Terrace. Covert operations are also being carried out each night with plain-clothed police walking, cycling and driving around the streets in a bid to catch thieves red handed.

Acting Chf Insp Rukin added: “Anyone entering a scrapyard in a taxi will be stopped and will have to prove that they have legally obtained what they are carrying. “If they don’t they will be arrested, and the taxi driver also runs the risk of being prosecuted. “The theft of metal is a problem at the moment and we are determined to do all we can to stop those committing these crimes.”

If scrapyards were not allowed to pay by cash then it would stop 90% of metal thefts overnight

Someone stripped a war memoral recently for scrap, I think this shows that all is lost with society, there is a lot to be said for capital punishment, you may not stop all, but you will dissuade most.

If you can read the speech from the link below you might just learn something about the society in which you live.

As said above take away the incentive i.e. the CASH and the problem dissapears as soon as people have to leave a paper trail they won't steal coz they are guaranteed to get caught

Skull, as I got to know Jimmy Reid quite well over the 6 years, or so, that he and William McIlvanney regularly visited my Restaurant. I can tell you that he always discussed and thought out his solutions to problems that he addressed, and never belittled the subjects of his well directed tirades. What I don't know is whether Mr McIlvanney gave him any help in writing his speeches although I think that there was probably an input of some kind there. There were several occasions when the Staff were sent home and we chatted, late into the winter night, about Politics and Labour Relations, which has always been one of my special interests.

I think that you would do well to emulate Jimmy.

p.s. Am I right in thinking that you are no longer a Taxi Driver?

Sorry about that, my utter contempt for your average cab driver sometimes spills over into my writing. I think it's something to do with people who wallow in their own ignorance and servility.

When I read stereotypical solutions to problems, which only serve to perpetuate the madness, I see someone who needs a good slap.

Jimmy Reid, was a great man with a huge understanding of what ails society, but I sometimes wonder if he was expecting too much from the proletariat. I might add, if edders had taken the time to read Jimmy Reid's speech, he may have written something different to the unimaginative [edited by admin], I've come to expect from some on this forum.

And as for no longer being a taxi driver, twenty-years of experience says I can comment upon what and who I like.

I know things will never change for most of the bewildered herd, but it does give me some light entertainment when practising my writing.

Oh and depending on what happens at the turn of the new year, I doubt you will be hearing from me quite so often and maybe not at all. :-|

Incidentally, wee Eddie, when I put Jimmy Reid's speech on the forum the first time around it was because of his Death. You only have to look at some of the comments to know, most of those commenting didn't even read his speech. Had they done so, they might have realised that “a rat race is for rats” is an apt description of the open sewer, you call the taxi trade. :-|

I take it. You do realise the solutions you trot out is exactly what the government wants to hear. No real thought or any attempt to educate yourself just the same old stereotypical sh*te, day in day out. Have you ever wanted to think a little deeper, instead of bumping, your gums and consider what the root cause of the problem may be?

The sad thing is, Jimmy Reid's speech was revered by people all over the world and is probably as relevant today as it was then, and you won't even take the time to read it.

You should be asking yourself, why you feel so insecure and closed minded you need to comfort yourself by writing the same pish at every opportunity?

Are you scared you might actually learn something about yourself or the world in which you live? #-o

Skull, i take it neither you nor any member of your immediate family have ever had the misfortune to suffer loss, hurt or damage as a result of crime or the actions of the great unwashed feckless legions of those who look upon others property as theirs should they fancy it or just want to kick the crap out of someone whilst off their faces due to benefit funded crack or snakebite?

lucky you

Skull, give me an idea of what you would do with the guy accused of the murder of Jo Yeates?

1. as your good self
2. as the victims parents
3. as a doo-gooder
4. as a hard liner
