Taxi driver loses appeal against Welwyn Hatfield Council to get Hackney Carriage licence reinstated

Friday, October 14, 2011

A taxi driver has lost his appeal against having his Hackney Carriage driver’s licence revoked.

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council had its decision to strip Zahoor Ahmed of his licence vindicated.

The decision, made on May 17, was upheld on Tuesday (October 11) at Watford Magistrates Court.

Ahmed’s licence was banned after a complaint when he had been seen driving in an “erratic and dangerous manner” and “reacting adversely to the complainant when challenged”.

In reaching its conclusion the Hackney Carriage Committee had taken into account several other incidents relating to Ahmed’s conduct and his standard of driving.

Magistrates ruled the council had reasonable cause to revoke the licence after considering the evidence.

Ahmed was ordered to pay £300 costs.

Cllr Bernard Sarson, executive member for governance and public health, said: “Revoking a taxi driver’s licence is not something we take lightly. However, we do expect our taxi drivers to maintain good conduct."

“Customers have a right to be comfortable with and confident about using taxis in our borough."

“If residents’, or drivers’, safety is compromised in any way, as we felt it was in this case for the former, the council will take appropriate action.”
