Braintree: Taxi driver warning over fare jumping

A singlemother is warning customers who are dodging paying their taxi fare that she will not tolerate it anymore. Driver Gina McIntyre estimates she has lost 50 per cent of her earnings in the last two weeks as people claim they cannot pay at the end of the journey and make a false promise to reimburse her.

The widow who is bringing up two sons by herself believes this is an industry wide problem affecting many drivers. She said: “To me they are stealing from me. “I have had enough to be quiet honest. “I am not prepared to put up with it.”

Under her contract Ms McIntyre pays 50 per cent of her earnings to a private hire firm, even if people do not pay, and out of the remaining half must pay for diesel, insurance and cleaning before making any profit. She said it is all kinds of people and fares which are not being paid, from a Sunday morning pick up at a village hall to late night trips into the centre of town and return journeys.

The next time it happens she will seek prosecution under the Theft Act 1978 which covers making off without payment. She said: “Do you think it’s fair that people stealing money from me and my family? “How would you feel if you went to work and didn’t get paid for work done? “However if it wasn’t for the honest and decent people that do pay for the fares I would give up.”

She believes CCTV in cabs could deter people.

Are we saying she's making it up to get off paying in as much as she should each week, or are we saying there is another truth stretcher amongst the ranks?

1) 50% are you kidding why are drivers stupid or deperate enough to sign up to that deal I assume its split purse

2) I cannot believe that 50% of customers are not paying their fare the odd one or two possibly unless she has a big sign on her head saying GULLIBLE MUG PLEASE !

3) If what she says is true she would be earning less than nothing no one would do that surely ?

4) How is she going to prosecute them the police won't entertain that idea and I'm sure she can't afford to take out a dozen or more private prosecutions

Money Up Front.

Might be a plan if it's as bad as she says.
