Economy puts the brakes on taxi sales

19 October 2011

Black cab maker Manganese Bronze today blamed an "uncertain" economy for sliding taxi sales in the last three months.

The loss-making manufacturer of the iconic cab saw UK sales down nearly 9% on last year in the quarter to September 30. They are down 7.5% on 2010 for the year so far.

Sales so far in October are "following a similar trend". the firm added.

Despite the sales gloom, Manganese at least held margins and boosted its already dominant share of the London cab market from 79% to 81%.

A huge order from Azerbaijan for 1000 cabs in the country's capital, Baku, also helped the manufacturer nearly treble its international sales this year.

From next year the company's London sales will also benefit from new rules which aim to clamp down on pollution by banning any cabs more than 15 years old from the capital's roads. Its shares were unchanged at 35p, valuing it at £10.6 million.
