Man facing jail for assaulting taxi driver and police officer

Peter Callaghan, 25, also drove a stolen taxi at police after stabbing and threatening to kill the driver

Court: Callaghan admitted offences at the High Court in Glasgow.

A man who stabbed a taxi driver before stealing his cab, crashing it into a police car and punching a constable in the face has been warned he faces a lengthy jail sentence.

Peter Callaghan's crime spree began when he pulled a knife on Munawar Gulzani in his taxi in Rutherglen, near Glasgow, on a Friday night in July.

As Mr Gulzani, 35, began bleeding from his arm, Callaghan said: "I'm going to kill you. You're not going to live longer. You're going to die here."

Callaghan then chased Mr Gulzani as he fled from the vehicle and tried to slash his face, the High Court in Glasgow was told.

Police spotted him after he got back into the taxi and reversed it into a fence before crashing into another vehicle.

Callaghan, 25, drove the cab at officers, threatening to shoot them, and crashed into a police patrol car, causing extensive damage. In his bid to get away he mounted the pavement and smashed into a metal fence, narrowly missing a group of bystanders.

Eventually Callaghan abandoned the taxi and punched PC John Drummond, damaging his tooth, before he was finally apprehended.

The court heard officers were forced to strap his legs and pin him to the ground before they could charge him.

Mr Gulzani needed hospital treatment for a stab wound to his arm and a cut lip.

Judge Lord Bracadale warned Callaghan, who admitted a string of charges including two assaults and threatening police, that he was considering an extended sentence.

Judge Lord Bracadale remanded Callaghan in custody and deferred sentencing until next month while reports are compiled.
