TAXI FIRMS WIN FARE RISE BATTLE

TAXI fares in Copeland are set to rise by up to 70% after pressure was put on the council by local cab firms.

The rise, the first in almost four years, was approved by Copeland Council’s licensing committee last week and is expected to come into effect by May.

Taxi fares are regulated by the council and local firms had been lobbying for an official rise for years.

They argued that Copeland was among the cheapest places in the country to travel by taxi.

The changes approved include a rise of the basic rate of £2 for the first mile to £2.30. Additional miles will be charged at £1.60, a 20p rise.

At 11.30pm, rather than midnight as it is now, fares will increase by half. One mile at 11.30pm will now cost £3, three miles £8.25 and so on.

It was also agreed at the meeting that a 3% rise in fares should take place each year.

Now if the fares went up annually, bit by bit, then the trade would never be faced with such negative headlines.

Alas I feel that trade will suffer for a few months.
