Hackney taxi fares to go up by five per cent

11:40am Wednesday 26th Oct 2011

Passengers will have to pay more for their Hackney taxi fares after the council agreed to put them up by five per cent on Monday night.

Members of the council's licensing panel met to make a decision on whether to accept an application for the hike from the RBWM Taxi Association.

Cabbies, who said the fares have not gone up in five years, applied to have them increased to cover higher running costs such as fuel and insurance.

Waheed Azam, chairman of the Royal Borough Taxi Association, said it was 'only fair' to ask for price to be put up.

Councillors on the panel also considered a petition by the borough's 171 private minicab drivers on the number of Hackney licence plates issued by the council.

At present the Royal Borough limits the number of Hackney plates handed out - but private drivers want it made easier to get one and are asking why the amount is restricted.

The Hackney licences are more lucrative than the private hire ones because drivers can be flagged down on the street instead of by appointment only.

Councillors agreed officers will carry out an independent survey of the taxi trade to see how deregulation of the Hackney licences would work.
