Taxi drivers in plea for more spaces

TAXI drivers in Prestatyn are calling on the council to listen to their pleas for more spaces.

The Denbighshire Licensed Taxi Trade Association, which represents 64 drivers in Prestatyn, is claiming ongoing works to the bus station have cut the number of spaces in town down to four.

Clive Ball, Secretary to the Association said: “We find ourselves driving continuously waiting for a space. We cannot provide a service for bus passenger because our predictions were ignored.

“This is a drain on earning power and fuel and will add to the pollution in the town. The council sold us the licences, the least they could do is provided space to enable us to work.”

The association has made an urgent plea to Denbighshire County Council Chief Executive Mohammed Mehmet and the Leader of the council, Cllr Hugh Evans to provide enough space for taxi operators to serve visitors, shoppers and residents.

Dave Whitby, a Prestatyn taxi driver, said: “We have only four spaces. The council has ignored our concerns which were made at an early stage, and we now just drive around looking for space. We apologise if this blocks up the town, but what else can we do?”

A Denbighshire Council spokeswoman said the number of permanent spaces in Prestatyn has not changed, but taxis were previously allowed to use the bus station because of the new railway bridge build.

She said: “The Licensing Team is looking at providing an extra three spaces on the High Street, and are presently consulting on this.”
