Dacorum Borough Council finds 39 offences in taxi safety checks An operation to check the safety of waste carriers, hackney carriages, private hire vehicles and public service vehicles (PSV) in Dacorum, has resulted in 39 offences being discovered. Dacorum Borough Council was part of the multi-agency scheme carried out on November 2. Between 3pm and 9.30pm, a total of 34 vehicles were stopped and checked by a team made up of the council's anti-fraud, licensing and environmental enforcement officers, VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) officers and police. Nineteen of the drivers stopped were found to be committing offences, to varying degrees. In total, 39 offences were found. Although the vast majority were minor offences, resulting in verbal warnings, three vehicles were given prohibition notices by VOSA officers. Police officers issued two Fixed Penalty Notices for vehicles without current MOTs. The council’s anti-fraud department collected details of working drivers, which will be compared to benefit claims, and any further necessary enquiries will be made. Individuals who have active benefit claims must inform the relative authorities; those found working and not declaring their earnings will be investigated and, where appropriate, prosecuted. Councillor Neil Harden, Conservative representative, said: "It is important that we keep faulty vehicles off the road. “We urge the owners of all licensed taxis and PSVs to carry out regular safety checks on their vehicles as we work in partnership with the police and the VOSA throughout the year." All of Dacorum's hackney carriages and private hire vehicles are tested annually before their licence is renewed. Drivers also have to regularly undergo a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check. VOSA licence PSVs and minibuses. In addition to their annual checks, VOSA also carry out regular roadside spot checks on these vehicles as well as goods vehicles. source: http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/news/9362570.Council_finds_39_offences_in_taxi_safety_checks/ |

With the exception of the Waste Vehicle the rest are carrying the public so they have to be safe and checks have to be done to ensure they are. If a vehicle is maintained then there would be no problems with the checks. |
