Private Hire driver stabbed in neck by robber who stole his car in Middleton A Private Hire driver was stabbed in the neck by a robber who stole his car. The 39-year-old driver was at the Stakehill Industrial Estate in Middleton at 9.30pm last night when the attack happened. After stabbing the driver, the offender drove off in the black Vauxhall Vectra taxi. The driver was taken to hospital and is still being treated for his injuries, although they are not life threatening. Moments after the stabbing the Private Hire car hit a parked car at the junction of Kingsley Road and Stanycliffe Lane.  A taxi driver is lucky to be alive after he was slashed across the throat by a teenage robber. Munir Ahmad needed 14 stitches to a deep cut beneath his chin and now says he can’t return to his job. The 39-year-old was attacked by a thug he had picked up from outside a pub in Middleton, near Rochdale. The youth, believed to be aged either 16 or 17, asked to be driven to Stakehill Industrial Estate on Rochdale Road. Once there he brought out the knife and demanded cash. Mr Ahmad, who has two young daughters, was slashed once across the throat. He managed to stagger out of the car to raise the alarm but the attacker followed him and tried to stab him again. Mr Ahmad grabbed his arm to protect himself from a further blow from the knife before the thug drove off in his car. His cash bag and a mobile phone were taken. The car, a black Vauxhall Vectra, crashed into a parked car at the junction of Kingsley Road and Stanycliffe Lane moments later. The teenager was seen running away. Mr Ahmad, who lives in Deeplish, Rochdale, was taken to hospital but is now recovering at home with his wife. He also has injuries to his knee and hand. He said: "I got out of the car and tried to run away but I slipped and he caught up with me on the floor. "He tried to slash me again and I held his arm. I told him there's money and a mobile phone in the car. "I thought I was going to die. I was shouting ‘someone please help me save my life’. The doctor said I was very lucky to survive." Mr Ahmad who has driven a taxi for nine years says he is so traumatised by the incident he is going to give up the job. "It was such a big shock. I just want to have a safe life. There’s too much risk in this job." Mr Ahmad has been driving for Middleton-based private hire firm Diamond Cars for four years. Shafaq Khan, managing director, said: "That knife could have killed him – and I think that the guy wanted to kill him. He is very, very lucky. "He has got 14 stitches in his neck and he cannot walk properly. As soon as he got to the destination, the guy took out the knife and slashed him across the throat under his cheek. "Then the guy tried to stab him again in the stomach. He was asking for money. "Being a taxi driver is a very risky business these days. These people who attack taxi drivers are cowards. We are struggling as it is. It is an awful situation and we are requesting that the police and the council do something to help us. We need to protect our drivers more." Mr Ahmad was called to collect the fare from the Harbord Harbord pub in Middleton at around 9.30pm on Tuesday. A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder by police in the Middleton area during the early hours of this morning. He was due to be interviewed today. |

Teenager charged over Middleton taxi driver attack A teenager has been charged in connection with an attack in which a taxi driver had his throat cut in Greater Manchester. A 39-year-old man was attacked and had his car stolen in Middleton at about 21:30 GMT on 15 November. A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named, has been charged with robbery, Section 18 Assault and aggravated vehicle taking. He is due before Rochdale Magistrates' Court later today. He was arrested after smashing the vehicle into another car. Police discovered drifter Sheldon from Middleton, Greater Manchester had robbed another taxi driver at knifepoint the day before. At Bolton Crown Court, he admitted causing grievous bodily harm, robbery and possessing a bladed article and was locked away in a Young Offender Institution for six years and eight months. An order banning his identity was lifted by the judge in the case. The court heard how Sheldon and another man Stephen Hastie, 25, had robbed a taxi driver at knifepoint on November 14 last year after he picked them up from the Middleton area. He handed over his takings and ran off and the pair drove off in his car, which was crashed into two parked vehicles nearby. The two yobs then got out and walked off. Can't really think of what kind of record keeping would make it much easier to trace a miscreant like this. I mean, if someone's planning to rob a driver it would be false name, wouldn't be home address etc etc. |
