Man damaged taxi and attacked driver

AN EGGBUCKLAND man attacked a taxi driver smashing his car with a metal pole after failing to pay his fare, a court heard.

Shaun Hocking, of Bradford Close, yesterday appeared at Plymouth Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to assault by beating, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon.

The court heard how the 23-year-old got very drunk at his father's birthday party one night in July and hailed a cab.

Hocking was dropped off in Bradford Close and went into his house to look for money as his girlfriend waited in the car, the court heard. But after a while she went inside to find out what was going on, leaving her handbag in the taxi.

A short time later the driver, Radoslav Jirku, went to the defendant's front door and the two men became involved in an argument. Hocking kicked the victim in the shin and testicles and the taxi driver ran to his cab to hide.

The court heard Hocking then grabbed a length of metal piping and started smashing up the car, breaking the window which caused an injury to his victim's eye.

Defence for Hocking said he had no previous convictions and this behaviour was completely out of character, as a result of drinking too much. He had worked hard as a plumber since he left school at the age of 16, he added. The court heard how he rarely drank but did so on this occasion as it was his father's birthday.

Yesterday after a fast delivery report a member of the probationary service told the court Hocking had shown genuine remorse and had suffered a bereavement in the family which contributed to his behaviour. This, she said, was completely out of character.

Hocking was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work to be completed at weekends, He was ordered to pay £1,103.89 compensation for damage to the car and £100 compensation to the victim.

Having attended the Court myself with the driver concerned I would like to straighten one thing out.

After being attacked, as he got into the Cab to protect himself, the driver straightened his right leg and by sheer luck the assailant ran onto the drivers foot. It was the assailant who caught a kind of kick - squarely in the wrinkled old family retainer.

The reporter made a mistake.

Next move is the civil court for the Eye damage, loss of earnings and loss of rental to the vehicle owner.

Another attention seeking idiot who didn't get enough love

I wonder how many years the fine, damages and repairs are going to take to flow from the benefits office, oops I mean wallet.

Actually this time that is not the case - he is in work (and quite well paid work at that), did not dispute that what he had done was wrong. Pleaded guilty, having in his first interview with the Police made it clear that he was at fault and ON THIS OCCASION, only my own opinion for what it is worth, we have a young man who has discovered that he becomes violent when in drink.

That is not to say that the local Association will not be seeking proper restitution for our member. I think a Lawyers Letter will achieve what is needed without going to Court.

I concur that an outcome like this is very unusual - I will as far as I am allowed - keep you all posted.

Refreshing Chris, but he's still a big baby to have acted like that anyway.
