Don't Be a Tired Taxi Driver Says Swinton Taxi Division

Swinton Taxi Division is warning taxi drivers to ensure they do not drive tired over the festive season. December can be a very busy month for taxi drivers as people descend on city centres for Christmas shopping and festive parties.

The private hire taxi insurance specialist surveyed 1,000 online customers and found that one in ten (11%) taxi drivers had momentarily nodded off during a night shift in the past five years. Staying alert behind the wheel will reduce the number of accidents and will have a positive impact on taxi insurance premiums.

The taxi insurance specialist is offering the following tips to ensure taxi drivers' remain alert behind the wheel at all times

-- Get a good sleep before a long shift, especially if the shift is between
the hours of 10pm and 6am
-- If the driver feels like he is about to nod off he should take a break
immediately
-- Open the window in the taxi for a regular supply of fresh air

Alexandra Cooke of Swinton Taxi Division said, "Driving tired can increase the chances of accidents so it is vital that taxi drivers stay alert behind the wheel. Taxi drivers are not only responsible for themselves but also their fare paying passengers."

That could be any vehicle. It is a left hand drive and there is no telling if it is a taxi, private hire or just an ordinary car.

Amazing that they only found that 1 in 10 drivers had had a kip in the last 5 years. How is 1 in 10 11% the school that I went to taught me that 1 in 10 was 10%.

There is a lot of absolute tosh talked about "Taking a Nap".

There is absolutely nothing wrong with "Power Napping" which is common practice in the American Business Scene. A Nap of 10 to 15 minutes is said to improve the concentration levels over the following couple of hours.

As for Sleep Apnoea, of course it exists, it is one of the latest excuses used by people that can't hack it. However it is not that common and those that do suffer from it, know that it is a debilitating condition, which blights every minute of their waking day.

I agree. Friday is a long day for me and I'm sure there are plenty of others out there the same. I get up at 6.30 am and at my day job desk for 08.30am. I finish there at 5 pm and usually have a meal break before starting work in the cab, usually about 7pm. "They" also say a change is as good as a rest. I normally log off about 2am but normally manage to have a "power nap" betweem 8.30pm and 10 pm when around our way it goes quiet cos everyone has got to where they want to be to get bladdered. Normally home by 02.30am. Glass of wine and watch heroes of comedy for an hour then off to bed proper.

You can't beat a good old snooze of at least an hour if your feeling tired, I usually get my head down about 6 o clock until 7, I go somewhere quiet put the seat back and turn off the radio and within minutes I'm away.

Power naps are fine, but not on a rank where the public can see you.

Doom, did you never do it, "when you were in the Trade".

The speed at which our Ranks here in Ayr, move, make staying awake almost impossible. Sometimes there are 90 minutes between Runs!

Well 90 minutes is certainly nothing on our ranks, but generally the only ones who fall asleep on the rank are the double-shifter types and the two jobs brigade.

But the one who consistently seems unable to keep his eyes open seems built like the bloke in the photo, thus I suspect there could be some kind of sleeping disorder in play linked to being overweight.

But it's a bit much when you see the punters occassionally having to wake the drivers up on the rank.

I'm still in the trade Eddie, and no I don't sleep on the rank, if I ever feel that tired I go home, and as Dusty points out, it is the double shifters that seem to be the ones doing it, these drivers will cause us to have a tacho card eventually, and tbh if you could keep the thick out of the job altogther it would be a blessing, example, why work 90 hrs a week as a cabbie and make £200 when you can work for Tesco 45 hrs and Asda 45 hours and get £500 pw, it just shows you just how stoooopid some people really are.

Doom: ~ Many apologies. From what others had said, I got the impression that you had retired from driving a Taxi Cab.

I do nap on the Rank, regularly. I find it is the only way that I can live a normal life, day to day, and work Back-shift.
