Passengers robbed taxi driver of his money and car

The private hire driver was robbed as he drove the two men to their destination in Edinburgh.

Two passengers pulled a knife out on a private hire taxi driver before robbing him and stealing his car.

The 53-year-old picked up the two men from Stenhouse Place East in Edinburgh at 4.15pm on Sunday. They asked to be taken Ford’s Road in the city.

As they arrived at their destination, one of the men pulled out a knife and demanded the driver hand over money. He stopped the car in the car park on Ford’s Road near Saughton Park and the men pulled the driver out the car.

They robbed him before getting into the black Volkswagen Passat and driving off. The car was found soon afterwards in Calder Gardens.

Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses to the robbery or anyone who saw the 54-plate Passat being driven erratically before it was dumped in Calder Gardens.

The two men are both described as white, in their early 20s and spoke with local accents. One was around 6ft 1in tall, of large build, clean shaven and was wearing a dark hat. The other was skinny, clean shaven and was wearing a black woolly hat, black fleece and jeans.

A police spokesperson said: "We have spoken to a number of people who were in the area and who witnessed the robbery, but we would appeal to anyone else who may have seen what happened to contact us.

"In addition, we'd like to hear from anyone who might recognise the description of the two men involved, or who may have seen the car being driven erratically throughout the area."

Anyone with information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.

Don't the police have a CSi unit there then, these two will have left DNA all over the car, places to look are on the dashboard, on the steeing wheel, wiper/indicator stalks, these area's won't have the normal customer traffic prints on them, and I bet our scallies are in the database already.

I'm surprised they're looking. Normally, they expect the miscreants to give themselves up and let's face it. It's not like the robbery of a Ph, driver really matters. :-|

Well there's a dividing line in such matters whereby on the one hand the police simply won't be bothered (perhaps despite public indications to the contrary) while on the other they'll make a complete and utter meal of things.

Where precisely that dividing line lies is anyone's guess.

The report says the 2 guys were picked up from Stenhouse Place East, was it from a House/Flat ?. If it was off the street, then I’m sorry to add insult to injury but the PH driver should also be getting charged. I know that there are, “Widos”, out there that do know that the PH can’t legally pick-up off the street, get in the car, get to their destination, and then tell the driver to F off. What can the driver do ?. That’s the risk these PH drivers are taking, and god forbid the motor being involved in a serious accident, cos’ I’m pretty sure the insurance would be null and void too. However, I hope the two, “Bits of Scum”, who carried out the attack are caught, and spend some considerable time in HMP.

Mr. Sussex, didn't you know that Fairplay, is one of Edinburgh's elite Hackney carriage drivers, from Niddrie? Ah well, you do now.

A little Schadenfreude from the man who would never seek to benefit from the misfortune of others. Who would have thought? You must be feeling pretty desperate. However, you did try to cover yourself.     #-o

Your first thoughts was that the driver picked up illegal, so tough sh**.

You come from the same stupid viewpoint as hackneys down here, they automatically think PH do nothing but work illegally, and customers wouldn't dream of booking a PH when there are hackneys about.

How very wrong you are.

It always amuses me, the desperate need to feel recognised for some perceived position or status above that of your peers. Luckily, the Ph, driver was only robbed at knife-point. Don't you feel even a little inadequate for seeing it the way you do? Coming from Niddrie, obviously has a huge impact on how you look at things. #-o

You must have felt absolutely wonderful upon passing “the knowledge" test. I can only imagine how looking down your nose at all those Ph drivers made you feel. Oh and what about when you bought your plate, the thought of it, wan*ing all over yourself. #-o #-o #-o
