Am I Safe taxi app introduced in Worthing Taxi passengers can check if their cab is licensed as part of a new scheme aimed at keeping revellers safe. Worthing is the first Sussex town to formally endorse the Am I Safe? smartphone application, which also notifies the passenger’s friends or family of their location at the time. Once the registration number is typed in on a person’s phone it will tell them if the vehicle is licensed, the type of licence and the make and model of the vehicle. Anthony Price-Thomson, the founder of the application, said it would give passengers – and their loved ones – peace of mind. Mr Price-Thomson said: “Am I Safe? creates a ‘footprint’ of the search, storing time, location, car registration, and your username, making you traceable quickly if something was to happen. " It also sends a copy of this information to your nominated friends and family by email. “At the same time, the licensed driver will get an email with your username only, so they too know that if anything happens to them the journey is traceable. It prevents a problem before it exists.” The free application has been supported by Worthing Borough Council. Jacqui Marsh, the chairman of the council’s licensing committee, said: “Although we have a taxi trade in the town of a high standard, who take customer safety very seriously in the main, this innovation will provide additional peace of mind for any member of the public at all concerned about their security.” However, cab bosses in Brighton and Hove said drivers already have a myriad of proof on them and the vehicles to show they are licensed. Andy Cheesman, a member of the Brighton and Hove Taxi Forum and the managing director of City Cabs, said: “When you get a licensed taxi the driver has two licensed plates, the number of the driver in front windscreen, the number of the vehicle in both back doors and on the rear of the car.” He said passengers can also request a text when the cab is ordered. source: http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/9378125.Am_I_Safe_taxi_app_introduced_in_Worthing/ |

Didn't we have a discussion about this a while back, and the general consensus was on what basis could a council share our details, even just registration details. Clearly our data doesn't matter in Worthing. |

All the details of driver, operators, Hackney vehicles and Private hire vehicles in my area are on the council website for anyone to view. |

So you tell me if they are going to pay for an app and put the registration number in. At 3.00 on a Sunday morning by the time they have loaded the app someone else will be in the car. |

You're probably right they wouldn't pay for it, but, it's free. The type of person that will use this application will be somebody who does care what vehicle they get into. If it became the subject of abuse then it will need looking at. So long as the app does not give out personal information about the driver I don't see a problem |
