Taxis can’t give heroes welcome CONFUSED cabbies have been told they can’t display ‘Heroes Welcome’ stickers in their taxis - despite the scheme being supported by the council. The stickers - part of a national scheme backed by Chesterfield Borough Council to show gratitude to the armed forces - are meant for display in shop and taxi windows. But after a civic launch of the scheme into the borough, the council said the stickers are not classed as “approved signage” and cannot be displayed in taxis. Cabbie, Eric Needham, said: “Our lads are fighting out there trying to keep this country safe. What’s a sticker going to hurt?” A council spokesman, said: “Current policy means that hackney and private hire vehicles can’t display any signage unless it’s approved by the Council or required by legislation. However, a report on this matter is being prepared to consider whether our policy can be amended so that good causes such as the Heroes Welcome campaign can be supported.” It will be discussed in cabinet next week. source: http://www.derbyshiretimes.co.uk/news/local/taxis_can_t_give_heroes_welcome_1_4005856 |

A Heroes Welcome in Chesterfield The Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, with the support of Chesterfield Borough Council, are introducing the Heroes Welcome Scheme to Chesterfield with a launch on Monday 7 November at 10.00 a.m. at the Town Hall. This scheme is a public show of support for the armed forces personnel and gives businesses the opportunity to indicate a warm welcome and special acknowledgement to serving or former armed services personnel and their families. Chesterfield will be the first town in Derbyshire to launch the scheme and has the full support of John Senior from Scarborough who is the national co-ordinator for the Heroes Welcome Scheme, which he created in 2008. John, decided to place a hand drawn poster in the window of one of his restaurants in Scarborough after he saw a spate of news articles showing a disconnection between the armed forces and the rest of Britain. From that hand drawn poster support grew across the country, with now almost 50 towns and cities, and the London Black Cabs supporting the scheme. John Senior, civic dignitaries and military personnel are supporting this scheme with their attendance at the launch. Cllr Peter Barr, Mayor of Chesterfield said: “As the Mayor, I feel we owe members and former members of the armed forces a huge debt of gratitude. The Heroes Welcome Scheme is a simple but effective way of showing that gratitude and how we appreciate all they do and have done for the country. “ http://www.chesterfield.gov.uk/default. ... 1&CID=7220 |

Unfortunately, common sense will have to wait until next week. CC's first post contains the most up to date link. BTW Doom, I agree with you on this. |

The law doesn't say who in the council can approve the stickers, just the council. So why does it need the Cabinet to agree to it? The LO in agreement with the council leader will suffice. |

In simple terms - under 47 they would have to attach a condition which is appealable And as we can show photographic evidence from all over the UK that advertising is allowed on Taxis And can get the advertisers to support I do not see that that they could win such a challenge. |
