Swansea cabbie ‘robbed of car by couple’

A SWANSEA cabbie was robbed of his taxi after being grabbed from behind by a passenger and threatened with a knife and a hammer, a jury heard.

The male passenger was allegedly city man Richard Anthony Davies, who went on trial yesterday at Swansea Crown Court.

According to the prosecution, Davies committed the offence with his girlfriend, Hannah Margaret Matthews, who has pleaded guilty to robbery.

Davies, aged 32, of Rhos Road, Gendros, denies robbing self-employed cabbie Joglu Miah of his Audi A4 and £100 on June 12 this year.

Davies also denies then driving the taxi along Parkhill Terrace, Treboeth, while disqualified.

Dyfed Thomas, opening the prosecution case, said Matthews, aged 20, of Hollett Road, Treboeth, had already pleaded guilty to robbery and the issue for the jury was whether her boyfriend, Davies, was her accomplice.

At 9.30pm — in response to a call made from a phone number attributable to Matthews — Mr Miah travelled to Treboeth to collect two people. These were Matthews and, according to the prosecution, Davies.

But a short time later, in Parkhill Terrace, Davies allegedly grabbed Mr Miah by the throat from behind and brandished a knife.

A struggle developed and Mr Miah picked up a torch. Davies then allegedly used a hammer to threaten the cabbie and the tool came into contact with one of the vehicle’s windows, smashing it. At this point , Mr Miah was ordered to get out and his cab was driven away.

At 11.30pm that night, claimed the prosecutor, Davies accompanied Matthews to the home of a friend at Heol Awstin, Ravenhill, and later police found nearby an Adidas jacket containing glass fragments matching the taxi’s smashed window.

On June 15, Davies and Matthews were arrested at an address in Hollett Road and a Bench jacket discovered there — belonging to Davies — was found to contain glass fragments matching the taxi’s smashed window.

Also found was a Lonsdale hoodie that Mr Miah identified as having been worn by Matthews, and a phone containing the number attributable to her. Interviewed , Davies — who was not picked out by Mr Miah in a police identification procedure — declined to answer detectives’ questions. The case continues.
