Leicestershire PH Driver had knife held to his throat

A private hire driver fought off a robber who held a knife to his throat.

The victim was driving for Saffron Private Hire when he was sent to pick up a fare in Whitteney Drive, Eyres Monsell, shortly after midnight on Saturday.

A short way into the journey the driver was threatened with a six-inch knife but he fought off the assailant who then ran off with about £25 cash.

The driver suffered bruises and a cut finger.

Saffron Private Hire owner George Mackay said: "He picked up the fare in Eyres Monsell and the lad was standing outside the house in Whitteney Drive when he got there.

"He was supposed to take him to Blaby but at the junction of Ebchester Close and Ebchester Road the lad put a knife to his throat and demanded his money.

"The driver grabbed the knife and they had a bit of a tussle. We think the lad punched him in the side because he had sore ribs.

"The lad grabbed his cash book, which only had change in it, and ran off like a headless chicken."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Leicestershire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
