Swansea taxi attack pair jailed

A MAN and woman have been sent to prison following a "savage and chilling" robbery which left a Swansea taxi driver seriously injured.

Victim Joglu Miah suffered cuts to his hand and face when he was attacked with a knife and threatened with a hammer.

Swansea Crown Court heard how city couple Richard Anthony Davies and Hannah Margaret Matthews robbed the cabbie of his Audi A4 and £100 cash in a violent incident last June.

Matthews, 20, of Hollett Road, Treboeth, admitted her guilt at an early stage, jurors were told.

But Davies, 32, of Rhos Road, Gendros, denied involvement and was convicted after a trial of offences of robbery and driving the taxi while disqualified from holding a licence.

Davies was jailed for seven-and-a-half years, while Matthews was sent down for three years.

Mr Miah was grabbed from behind when he picked up Matthews and Davies in the Treboeth area at 9.30pm on June 12, said barrister Patrick Llewelyn, prosecuting.

As he throttled Mr Miah, Davies pulled out a knife with a six-inch blade and held it to the taxi driver's chin, cutting it. During the struggle Mr Miah grabbed a torch, but Davies then used the knife to cut his hand, causing a deep laceration to the bone of his left thumb.

Davies also produced a hammer and used it to smash one of the windows of the taxi as Mr Miah was ordered to get out.

Mr Miah's taxi was then driven away along Parkhill Terrace by Davies and the vehicle was eventually abandoned in Gendros.

Giving evidence, Davies was adamant he was not with Matthews at the time of the robbery. He claimed he spent the evening in question at the homes of various friends in Blaenymaes.

Mr Llewelyn said that in a victim impact statement Mr Miah had described feeling traumatised by the robbery.

He had been left very badly shaken up, experiencing flashbacks and frightening dreams, and the incident had left him wondering whether to continue as a cabbie.

Defence lawyers Huw Rees and Giles Hayes said both defendants had been living chaotic drug-fuelled lives at the time of the robbery. Mr Hayes accepted that Matthews had phoned for the taxi knowing there was going to be a robbery.

Judge Paul Thomas QC, sentencing, described the incident as "savage and chilling".

"The courts will do all they can to protect vulnerable taxi drivers who are carrying out a valuable public service," he said.

Davies had got Matthews to set up the robbery, he said, but Matthews had willingly gone along with it.

Davies was also given a three-year driving ban.
