Committee to discuss taxi changeTHE maximum age that vehicles can be licensed for use as either taxis or private hire vehicles in Peterborough looks set to be extended next week.
Peterborough City Council’s Licensing Committee will meet on Thursday to discuss a series of changes to Hackney Carriage and private hire vehicle licences.
If approved, it would mean an increase in the maximum age that vehicles can be used as Hackney Carriages from 12 years to 15.
It would also see the maximum age for private hire vehicles rise from eight to 10.
Representations have been made by, among others, the Peterborough Hackney Drivers Federation, which argued that the financial crisis has led to a lower mileage for all vehicles, while the manufacturer of the vehicles builds them to run for at least 15 years.
A report to go before the committee, meanwhile, recognises that the lifespan of vehicles has been increasing as technology has improved.
Another proposed change is to increase the age at which a vehicle can be registered as a private hire vehicle for the first time from a maximum of three years to five years.
