Drivers attracted to diesel cars by their fuel efficiency have seen the cost of their fuel soar, as the price gap between it and petrol has more than quadrupled in two years.
AA data reveals that the average price of a litre of petrol is 132.2p compared with 140.7p for diesel - at the start of 2010 it was less than 2p per litre.
Luke Bodset, AA spokesman, says the 8.5p a litre difference is ‘the highest sustained difference we have ever seen, if you discount the exceptional fuel price spikes in 2008.’

Could it also be that oil companies have seen sales of petrol drop so think upping diesel is fair compensation?

Why do people who drive 5000 miles a year buy a diesel car and pay £2500 more than the equivalent petrol version?...

They would be much better off with LPG, cleaner, cheaper and quieter, less servicing and no clatter

It's because there's a demand for diesel nowadays and with diesel being a waste product of petrol refining they need to refine petrol to make diesel.

Until the duty rises on LPG then the owners of LPG are shafted.

They can always use petrol.

And if Ford, GM and the rest DIDNT have plants producing Internal Combustion engines, we would have a viable electric car by now, not the toytown/clowns cars (oh look, a Renault Twizy!) with 50 mile ranges they throw out at us to make it LOOK like they are interested

which will still be even cheaper than diesel

ive been told that LPG duty will always remain as it is and is geared to make the cost around 60% of that of petrol

What you on about diesel is not a waste product of petrol refining at all the refining process can be adjusted to make more diesel or more petrol depending on what equipment is installed at the refinery ! BUT to increase the production of diesel in the UK requires investment at the refinery and as refineries are seen as the less profitable part of the oil business the companies are not so keen
