Taxi was trashed and driver injured at travellers’ site A TAXI driver was injured and his cab trashed after he dropped two passengers off at a travellers’ site near Evesham.
The men got into Davinder Gurche’s taxi in Warwick and paid the £25 fare, Worcester Crown Court heard.
But when the taxi stopped at the site in Cleeve Prior they became aggressive, said Lynette McClement, prosecuting.
One passenger, Thomas Rogers, pulled a headrest out and hit Mr Gurche with it. The men then picked up missiles outside and hurled them at the cab, breaking all the windows.
Rogers, aged 23, of Hospital Lane, Cannock, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage.
Judge Richard Rundell said the attack had been unprovoked and alcoholfuelled.
He gave Rogers a six-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, with 150 hours of unpaid community work. Rogers, who worked in his father’s building firm, must also pay £2,000 compensation to Mr Gurche and £1,500 costs.
The judge said he suspected that, bearing in mind Mr Gurche’s ethnicity, an element of racism was involved.
Defending, Colin Drew said that on October 17, 2010, father-of-two Rogers was “in the throes of alcohol addiction” and living apart from his wife.
They were now back together and he was having alcohol treatment.
He had “no explanation”
for the behaviour and said the other man was not caught.
