Bumpy ride for taxi and private hire sticker scheme in Birmingham

PLANS to spend £2,000 of taxpayers’ money on stickers for private hire vehicles and taxis were put on hold after being branded “daft”.

Birmingham City Council wanted to spend the cash on printing signs designed to give passengers details of how to contact the authority’s licensing department with complaints.

But members of the city’s licensing committee rejected the proposal. Officials came up with the idea when a survey showed the satisfaction rate among consumers contacting the department had dropped from 100 per cent to 88 per cent.

Staff obtained a quote for the stickers of £1,600 plus VAT – bringing the total cost to just under £2,000. But councillors poured cold water on the scheme.

Coun Majid Mahmood (Lab, Hodge Hill) said: “Surely this will encourage passengers to make a complaint, which is not fair on our private hire drivers who already get bashed a lot.”

Coun Nigel Dawkins (Con, Bournville) dismissed it as a “daft idea”.

The committee agreed to put off a decision until members had carried out a consultation with drivers.
