Taxi permit scheme at Bristol Temple Meads is postponed

A scheme designed to cut congestion at the taxi rank at Bristol Temple Meads railway station has been postponed to allow drivers more time to sign up. The permit system by First Great Western (FGW) means taxi drivers will have to pay £375 per year to use the railway station as a base.

The National Taxi Association (NTA) in Bristol objected but dropped its opposition after taking legal advice. Now the dispute has been resolved, FGW has postponed the scheme until 1 March.

FGW, which owns the land at the front of the station, said the scheme would ease congestion, and that charging for permits was normal at other stations. Part of the money raised from the permits will be used to improve the access and exit points on to the A4 from Station Approach.

I can't wait for them to start charging at our station. We have 2 trains an hour and they both arrive at the same time. With a rare exception maybe one or two people want a taxi and very often, none at all.

They aren't interested in little stations like that, they are after the mainline stations which serve thousands of people a day.

And to line the pockets of the train operating company and station owner Network Rail.

It was mentioned that they may charge a couple of years back.

Sounds a bit like our station.

To be honest though I wouldn't mind paying a couple of quid a week for a permit, because it would keep the non-regulars off the rank and thus would at least pay or itself. I think. :?

It would at least make it easier to get onto the rank :D

It is coming I'm told east Midlands trains are looking at permits for Stamford,Oakham and Melton the price will be around £300 annually they introduced pay parking for Stamford last year but from what I hear the revenue generated is below expectations so they are looking at other ways to inprove their revenue stream from these stations

Again sounds a bit like our station, and I'd pay £400 a year if I could be guaranteed two fares an hour from the station, but I can't really see either happening.
