Police name cab driver who died after assault

Bedfordshire Police have named the taxi driver who died at the weekend from injuries sustained in an earlier assault as 61-year-old Mehar Dhariwal of Hillgrounds in Kempston.

Mr Dhariwal’s death is now being investigated by the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit and while he has been formally identified an inquest is yet to be opened while the Coroner awaits additional information following a post mortem.

The original assault on Mr Dhariwal occurred in the early hours of Sunday, January 22 at the AGS Taxi rank in St Peters Street, Bedford. The victim had been treated at hospital for his injuries and was discharged the same day. He was re-admitted to Bedford South Wing Hospital five days later and died in hospital in the early hours of Sunday, January 29.

DCI Sean O’Neil, who is now leading the investigation said: “A thorough investigation into the original assault was carried out and a man was arrested and charged with ABH before the victim died.

"Now that circumstances have changed it is only right that we establish the exact cause of this man’s death and relook at the events that preceded it. I would like to reassure the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased that we are doing everything possible to establish exactly what happened.”

A 26-year-old Bedford man who is charged with ABH has been remanded in custody.

Bedford man pleads not guilty to taxi driver's murder

A man from Bedford has pleaded not guilty to the murder of taxi driver Mehar Dhariwal.

26-year-old Daniel Rogers had the charge put to him via a video link between Luton Crown Court and Bedford prison, where he is being held on remand.

Judge Richard Foster told Rogers, of The Cloisters, that his trial will begin on July 11 2012 at the same court.

Mr. Dhariwal, who was 61, died in January a week after an assault outside a cab office in St Peters Street in Bedford.
