Taxi driver drove off, trapping man’s arms

A TAXI driver drove off with a passenger hanging into the vehicle through the window.

The passenger was carried some 50 metres before he fell and injured his hand and face.

Mark Leonard Williams, of Park Avenue, Llangollen, denied dangerous driving and was cleared when the prosecution offered no evidence against him.

But he admitted an alternative charge of careless driving.

He was fined £100 with £100 costs and three penalty points were imposed on his driving licence.

John Wyn Williams, prosecuting, said the main witnesses to the incident in October 2010 were clearly drunk.

The passengers had taken a taxi from Wrexham to Llangollen, where they had a few drinks, and then ordered another taxi to collect them.

Williams, 41, arrived in a five-seater vehicle and started to drive the group towards Wrexham when there was a discussion about the fare, which he explained would be £38.

But in Ruabon Road a female in the party told him they would like to get out and asked him how much the fare was by now.

He said it was £25. They all got out, he was paid but it was alleged by the passengers that Williams wound his window down and called them a bunch of f****** b******s.

One of the men asked him what the problem was through the window and Williams drove away with the man saying he could not get his arms out of the car quickly enough.

“As the defendant drove away, he (the man) was stuck in the window of the car,” said Mr Williams.

The man was carried some 50 metres; the vehicle braked and the man fell on to the floor, causing injuries to his hand and face.

Photographs showed they were nasty injuries, the prosecutor said.

He was treated in hospital and made a full recovery.

Edward Moss, defending, said there was a dispute about the fare and there was evidence of passengers being abusive to Williams.

It was the defence case the money was thrown at him and words were exchanged between the two parties.

But Mr Moss added: “He knows that the way he drove was unacceptable.”

Williams denied he had ever swerved to get the man off the vehicle.

He had stopped immediately and contacted the police and the emergency services.

He was full of remorse over what had occurred.

Judge Niclas Parry, sitting at Mold Crown Court in Chester, said he would not ban him from driving but warned him he now had nine penalty points on his driving licence.

Maybe his hands were cold and he was trying to warm them up a bit? :?
