Dopey burglars book taxi for getaway

TWO bungling burglars were caught by police after they booked a TAXI as their getaway car using their real names – and in the middle of the day.

Police said they “couldn’t fail” to catch dozy crooks Kevin Forrester, 33 and Robert Scullion, 28, after they were caught jumping a cab to help deliver their stolen goods back home – just one mile away.

And to add to the bizarre episode, a court heard last week that Forrester had his friend Scullion assist with the burglary as he ‘did not want to be late for a dentist’s appointment’

Police have said the bizarre incident was like ‘something out of The Bill’.

Magistrates were told that on January 11, Forrester broke into a log cabin by a home in Haverhill, Suffolk, snatching £7,465 of audio and recording equipment around 10am.

He was then joined by Scullion, who ordered a large, people-carrier sized taxi to deliver the equipment back to his home.

Police were first alerted by the taxi-driver, who reported the suspicious nature of the transport.

The owner of the burgled property then reported that the cabin had been broken into and the equipment stolen.

Police were then alerted by neighbours at both the loading in Lordscroft Lane and the subsequent unloading in Montfort Court to the dopey pair’s suspicious antics.

Police acted swiftly, and after assembling necessary warrants knocked on Scullion’s door around 4pm.

Magistrates heard how he answered ‘Oh no!’ as officers entered and found all of the recording equipment in a bedroom upstairs.

Both men, from Haverhill, pleaded guilty to burglary at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.

“It was almost like an episode of The Bill,” said Haverhill Police Inspector Peter Ferrie. “It was a perfect example of how you couldn’t make this up.

“They used their real names to pick it up in the taxi, have not get a getaway vehicle, and then had it all delivered to his home address, so we couldn’t really fail with this one.

“By the time we had finished with everyone’s phone calls – and there were about 15 – the whole thing was laid out in front of us.”

Scullion and Forrester are due to appear at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.
