Taxi drivers stepped in to restrain teenagers who attacked man outside bakeryA man who stepped in to stop two teenagers making remarks about his girlfriend was rendered unconscious after the thugs assaulted him.Barry Coates was only saved from more severe injury by the actions of two taxi drivers — one of whom threw a cup of hot tea over the 17-year-old attackers — and others who stepped in.
At Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday, Steven McGovern, of Bonnyrigg Place, and Darryl Fox, of Provost Road, admitted assaulting Mr Coates on April 10 last year at Kinghorne Road, by pushing him on the body, repeatedly punching him on the head, knocking him to the ground and repeatedly kicking him on the head and body and stamping on his head, all to his injury.
Fox also admitted committing the offence while on bail.
Depute fiscal Lisa Welsh told the court Mr Coates, his girlfriend and two friends were at Rough & Fraser Bakers in Kinghorne Road around 4am, and while in the queue McGovern and Fox began shouting at his girlfriend. When he stepped in and asked them to calm down they attacked him.
Fox punched him on the face and McGovern joined in, Ms Welsh said.
The court heard Mr Coates fell to the ground and both accused continued to kick him and stamp on his face and head.
The attack only halted when a taxi driver and three other people pulled them off. Another taxi driver threw a cup of tea over both accused in an effort to deter them. The taxi drivers then restrained both accused until the police arrived.
Mr Coates was taken to Ninewells Hospital where he was treated for severe bruising and lacerations to his head.
The attack left a clear mark of the sole of a training shoe across his face, the court was told.
Sheriff Munro sentenced both to periods in a young offenders' institution — Fox for 21 months and McGovern for 18 months.
