Taxi driver attacker flees Huntingdon Crown Court

Curtis King was found guilty of assaulting a taxi driver in Peterborough

A man from Cambridgeshire has fled a court room just minutes before he was found guilty of attacking a taxi driver.

Curtis King, 23, and his sister Anesha King, appearing at Huntingdon Crown Court, were both found guilty of causing actual bodily harm.

The court heard they had assaulted taxi driver Mohammed Farooq in June 2011.

But before the verdict Curtis King, of Cavendish Street, Peterborough, fled from the court.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest, said Cambridgeshire Police.

Anesha King, also of Cavendish Street, Peterborough, was released on bail to be sentenced on 4 June.

Det Con Francesca Scott, who led the investigation, said: "This was a brutal attack on a man who was simply doing his job.

"When he acted in accordance with his license he was set upon and suffered a number of injuries.

"We take this type of offence very seriously and we will not tolerate such violence."

I remember this one all because he refused to take more passengers than he was licensed for so they dragged him out the car and beat him up But I also remember there were several assailants why weren't the other's in court ? I also remember the police didn't investigate this until there were major protests

Sounds like there has been a bit of a miscarriage of justice

Man jailed for fleeing court before taxi driver attack conviction

A man has been jailed for four weeks for absconding from a court minutes before being convicted of attacking a Peterborough taxi driver in June 2011.

Curtis King, 23, of Cavendish Street, Peterborough, fled Huntingdon Crown Court on 9 February.

He was arrested on Saturday and appeared at Peterborough Crown Court where he was also remanded in custody for the assault on Mohammed Farooq.

Defending, Nenad Spasojevic said King had fled to "get his affairs in order".

He said King had made the "rash decision" to abscond as he feared he might be jailed immediately for the attack on Mr Farooq.

King, and his sister Tanisha King, were both found guilty of causing actual bodily harm.

Sentencing for that offence will take place at a later date.

The mind boggles "he needed to get his affairs in order" I hope that gets him a stiffer sentence although it is still only the 2 that have been convicted not the rest of the gang

Court: Jail for Peterborough man over taxi driver attack

Curtis King, a violent thug who assaulted a taxi driver and then sparked a police hunt by going on the run was jailed for 15 months on Tuesday (8 May).

Curtis King (23) punched private hire driver Mohammed Farooq (36) in a brutal assault in Peterborough, which also involved his sister Tanisha King, on 4th June 2011.

Mr Farooq was left with a fractured cheek, bruising and fractured ribs.

Curtis King, a forklift truck driver, of Cavendish Street, Peterborough, went on the run on 7th February - just before a jury at Huntingdon Crown Court was about to deliver its verdict at his trial.

After being told earlier in the day he faced being sent to prison if convicted, he failed to answer bail to hear the jury’s guilty verdict – leading Recorder Robert Blomfield to issue a warrant for his arrest.

King handed himself in at the city’s Thorpe Wood police station four days later and was jailed for four weeks for failing to answer bail.

He was then due to be sentenced on March 8 but the prison van he was travelling to court in got delayed in heavy traffic on the A14.

As a result King returned to the court and was sentenced for 15 months in jail for the assault occasioning actual bodily harm on Mr Farooq.

King’s sister, mother-of-one Tanisha King (24), also of Cavendish Street, was also convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm against Mr Farooq in the three-day trial, but was later spared jail.

Tanisha King, who was pregnant at the time of her sentencing on March 8, fought back tears in the dock after Recorder Blomfield asked her why she should not be sent to jail during the hearing.

King, who has previous convictions for violence, said: “Because of my baby. I’m not going to behave like this any more.”

She was given a sentence of nine months in prison suspended for two years.

She was also sentenced to a two-year supervision order and given a three-month curfew order to stay at her home between the hours of 9pm and 7am.

During the attack, Mr Farooq was punched by Tanisha King, before being punched and knocked to the ground by Curtis King outside Marisqueira cafe, on the corner of Russell Street and Cromwell Road.

Curtis King then delivered a kick to the stricken taxi driver as he lay on the ground.

Both Curtis and Tanisha King denied a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm but were found guilty by a jury following a trial.
