Coventry's Allens Taxis sold to rival firm Arena Taxis

A NEW taxi headquarters is being created in Coventry after one of the city’s most famous companies Allens Taxis changed hands.

Coventry Arena Taxis has bought rival firm Allens Taxis – which has been running in the city for more than 70 years.

The deal was completed last month and new owner Jhalman Singh has invested in a site in Lockhurst Lane to create new offices for the firm.

He said: “We enquired about purchasing Allens Taxis and I am delighted a deal has been finalised.

“Allens was established in 1938 by a Coventry icon – Aubrey Allen, a true Coventry success story and has since been managed by his son Clive and grandson Richard.

"Allens is a Coventry institution with an excellent reputation. Of course, I am keeping the name Allens Taxis and the famous 76 555555 number, most people in Coventry when they think of ‘taxis’ think of Allens and can sing the old radio jingle instantly – you dial we’ll drive.

“My dad used to work for Allens Taxis and he is still a cabbie now – he was always very proud to work for the family company and we intend to uphold their core traditional values and maintain the good reputation they have achieved over the last three quarters of a century.”

Coventry Arena Taxis was set up six years ago and has grown considerably over the years. The new headquarters form part of the firm’s ambitious ongoing expansion plans.

Jhalman added: “We wanted to create an office and base that staff would be proud to work in and will hopefully enhance the local business community. That’s the reason we invested in such a prominent site.

“We won’t be keeping taxis here and it won’t be a rank. This is where the headquarters will be based and we will look to rent out the rest of the plot for development.

“My wife Susan, who was a nurse at Walsgrave Hospital for 20 years, and I are both Coventry born and bred and we want to make this a major success for the city that we both love and are proud to call home.”

The couple bought the site through commercial property specialists Shortland Penn & Moore.

James Brookes, of Shortland Penn & Moore, said: “It’s great to get a deal done here as part of these exciting plans.

“Allens Taxis is one of the best known business names in the city and this is a new chapter in the company’s history.”

Good luck to them, especially if, as the name suggest they are Sikh's.

However planning ahead whilst this debacle with the Law Commission is hanging over our heads is a very brave, or foolish thing to do.

I wonder why the Allen family sold out.

"Fingers in Pies" suggest they may not have been the most popular Family butchers.
