Plymouth taxi driver repeatedly punched by thief who stole his cash

A PLYMOUTH taxi driver was punched "repeatedly" in the head by a thief who made off with his cash.

Police have issued the description of a man believed to be called 'Tommy' after two men made off from the victim's cab in the Compton area of the city.

Pc Helen Head, who is leading the investigation, said the driver had picked up the pair from Union Street on the evening of Saturday, February 4.

The men, who both appeared to have been drinking, then exited the vehicle in Reddington Road, Higher Compton, at around 9.30pm.

The man thought to be named Tommy stole a small amount of cash from the driver as he left, Pc Head said.

She added: "The taxi driver exited his car and the male believed to be Tommy assaulted the taxi driver, punching him repeatedly to the head.

"I would like to appeal for witnesses who may have seen the incident or have any knowledge regarding two males who were involved."

The taxi driver was left with minor injuries including soreness to his head, police say.

Both men the police would like to speak to are described as being white, of slim build and in their early 20s.

The man thought to be named Tommy was wearing a light-coloured denim shirt and brown or camel-coloured trousers, while the other wore a dark woolly hat and a dark bomber jacket.

Witnesses, or anybody with further information, should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111 quoting crime reference EC/12/1239.
