Aberdeen bypass legal challenge refused

Campaigners trying to prevent the construction of the Aberdeen bypass have been left "disappointed" after losing their legal challenge.

The 28-mile Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR) was originally given the go-ahead by Scottish ministers in December 2009 after a public inquiry.

William Walton, from protest group Road Sense, lodged a legal bid to block construction of the £400m road.

A judge rejected that and Mr Walton then appealed against the decision.

The appeal, before judges in Edinburgh, was heard in December after it had been agreed Mr Walton's costs would be covered, win or lose.

Road Sense argued the process of route selection was "fundamentally flawed and unjust".
'End arguments'

However, many business leaders in the area support the scheme.

And a statement released by the Scottish Court Service on Wednesday morning said: "The appeal has been refused. The full opinion will be available at 12:00 today on the Scottish Court Service website."

Mr Walton told BBC Scotland he was "disappointed" at the decision of the judges and may consider an appeal to the Supreme Court, after consulting with members before a final decision.

North East Labour MSP Richard Baker said: "Now it is time to end the legal arguments and get on with the important work of building this vital transport initiative."

Sounds like common sense to me to have a bypass. Only question really is why already doesn't?

I think the route is wrong as well. It should have gone to the East of Aberdeen!

A bye pass is good for any town or city that's suffering gridlock but, you come up against tree huggers along the route.

I'm sure a few trees are not too important given we already trillions of trillions of others on the planet.

There has to be something wrong with folks in that part of the nation, a coven of greenies or something, Trump has experienced the same.

Kinda makes me wonder if folks up there have even heard that the wheel has been invented.

Not only are we aware of the wheel's invention, a local lad made improvements :D

Mr Walton and his ultra-NIMBY roadsense group are fronting for some very affluent and well connected people who don't want the new road going through one of Aberdeens most exclusive areas. They have very little support from the people of Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire.
Let's just hope they see (road)sense and ditch any ideas of appealing further.
We needed this bypass thirty years ago.

Like most locals, I thought Trump's development was a good idea and I still do, although I don't like the way he does business.
I started to have doubts when I heard about his Eastern European security men helping locals decide to sell their property to him :roll:
He whitters on about damaging the environment - not a thing he worried about when building all over a site of special scientific interest.
Trump got his golf plans approved in the full knowlege there was to be an offshore windfarm.
He went crying to the First Minister when the Aberdeenshire council refused him permission.
Did he complain then about turbines? No :shock:
Now the same First Minister is demonised by this to$$er for refusing to ditch the windfarm project, because it will spoil the view from his 3rd tee.
(The turbines will be 3 miles offshore BTW)

He is an erse of the tallest order. He should STFU and get on with finishing his course.

Park this pratt in front of a wind turbine and you could solve the world's energy problems at a stroke. :lol:

Well believe it or not, that was one of the proposals.
It was rejected as being too expensive.

Had it been Edinburgh, it would no doubt be half built by now, hideously over budget, well behind schedule and with tramlines being accomodated in the scheme. :lol:
