Wallasey police inspector suspended and under investigation over alleged help to Wirral criminal’s brother for taxi licence

A MERSEYSIDE police inspector is suspended and under investigation for allegedly helping the brother of a well-known local career criminal get a job as a taxi driver.

Insp Phil Leech, who works out of Wallasey police station, was suspended from duty over allegations he stepped in to help Michael Maguire, the younger brother of jailed hardman Matty, in his application for a taxi licence from Wirral council.

It is believed Insp Leech may have known the Maguires for some time and was working out with them in the same gym.

The investigation is an internal one at the moment, with Wirral council saying they were unaware of any alleged impropriety, but would co-operate if the police came to them.

Detectives are now understood to be scrutinising Insp Leech’s mobile phone records and what involvement, if any, the officer had in Michael Maguire being given a licence.

The ECHO understands police have even made attempts to speak to Matty Maguire in prison over the matter.

After being sentenced to 11 years last month, 37-year-old Maguire, from Prenton, is being held outside of Merseyside because of threats from rival crooks.

The latest on his long list of convictions saw him caught in a police sting as he organised the transfer and payment for 150kgs of cannabis.

Police targeted Maguire and bugged his car to listen in on conversations between him and his associates.

When police searched his parents’ Prenton home after discovering the drugs, they found a gun Maguire had hidden in their back garden without them knowing.

Alongside the semi- automatic pistol were nearly 300 bullets, 93 of which were “expanding rounds” designed to cause as much damage as possible on impact with their target.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “We can confirm that a serving police officer from Wirral has been suspended as part of an investigation into an allegation of misconduct.

“The officer, who is 48 years old, was suspended in December 2011, while the allegation is investigated.

“As the matter is currently under investigation it would be inappropriate to comment any further.”

A Wirral council spokeswoman said: “This driver appeared before the panel more than 12 months ago and was granted a licence to operate as a private hire driver.

“His licence has subsequently been renewed for a further 12 months. We are not aware of any alleged impropriety surrounding his initial application for a private hire licence but we would, of course, assist with any investigation if requested and take action to review his licence if necessary.”

I shouldn't think the bobby should be too bothered, if he looses his job with the police he could always apply for a licence himself. It's not like we haven't got any criminals with licences already, here

Yes and they'll bend every rule in the book to do so.
